Lake and Peat Sequence, Rack Pit, Cincinnati, Ohio

The dark band about a meter above Sharon's head is a peat layer formed when a backwater lake from the Ohio river drained. The lake sediment below the peat has very little organic material, but those lake sediments above the peat are rich in snail and clam shells. Photo by K. Savage.
