Subglacial Stratigraphy, Boundary Glacier, Alberta

The glacier is moving right to left. Note the small meltwater channel at the bottom of the image. The various layers under the ice reflect a complex history. The lower layers reflect a time prior to glacier advance. The upper layers are subglacial deposits of lodgement (?) processes. Why the layers? Some of the structure in the uppermost deposits appears to have a fissile structure.
