QTVR of New Zealand Glaciers 1999
The following Apple QuickTime VR Panorama movies present the conditions in front of the Franz Joseph, Fox, Muller, and Tasman Glaciers in New Zealand in late February 1999. These are not small, but well worth it!
From the Wet side:
Frans Josph Glacier 1 - (1.7 mb) - Up close and personal - origin is right at the glacier margin.
Frans Joseph Glacier 2- (2.2 mb)- More or less an overview taken from near the meltwater outlet - the other two pans come from the left (south) side of the glacier. Note the signs on the foreplane.
Frans Joseph Glacier 3 - (2.3 mb) The glacier is just visible on the left side of the image. Panning to the right follows the progression of the "outwash" from the source down valley.
Fox Glacier 1 -(1 mb)- Overview from an older lateral moraine. Note some parts of the margin have meltwater coming out, some parts are pushing up over older moraine, and some parts are level with the outwash.
Fox Glacier 2 -(2.2 mb) - View about even with the margin. Note details of the ice structure and the ice cave.
Fox Glacier 3 -(2.2 mb) - View from near the cave mouth. Blocks of ice and big rocks - the side bedrock wall are rather steep.
From the Dry side:
Mueller Glacier -(1.4 mb) - From the Little Ice Age moraines. Lots of ice falls off Mt. Sefton in the back.
Tasman Glacier (2.9 mb) - Initial view straight up the debris-covered glacier. To the left is double peaks of Mt. Cook, to the right is the lake that has developed recently (~25 years).
