Objectives:
Investigate the formation of outwash landforms.

Reading:

Benn and Evans, section 3.8 and 3.9.

Optional Reading

Questions:
15 points each

1. Using Figs 3-9 in Smith (or p. 2 in class handout) as a guide, delineate the different types of bars on the image Full Channel. Is the stream running from left to right or right to left?

2. Using Fig 3-12 in Smith (or top p. 3 in class handout) as a guide, delineate the different features on the image Gravel bar.

3. Image 9231 of a glacier margin in Iceland was taken in Sept 1986. Image 1308 covers the same area in July 1992. The topo sheet (Skeidhararsandur, Iceland) provides a reference. Each square on the topo is 1 km across. Note that the topo reflects the topography in 1945. Do not assume that all three images are the same scale. Estimate the volume of sediment transported by the meltwater stream from the east (right) during that time.

4. From the Trip to the Watson Pit. - Estimate how far away from the glacier margin these sands and gravels were deposited. Justify your answer.

Evaluation will be based on both content and its presentation.
