Glacial Geology Erosion Homework
Objective: Quantify the impact of glacial processes
Skills: Sampling, data analysis and reporting
This homework has several aspects: background content, data analysis and reporting it.
Demostrate your content understanding
- 1. (15 pts) View and answer the questions in the Striation Problem.
- 2. (15 pts) Suggest which erosion process(es) acted on this feature and if more than one in what order.
Data Analysis
You gathered data as described in Clast Data Collection
Now what to do with it? (Add your data to the larger data sets and use the combination for these questions and be sure to show any necessary plots to support your answer.)
- 3. (15 pts) Compare the visual sphericity values with Sneed and Folks (S).
- Sneed and Folk, 1958 suggest that sphericity (S) can be calculated from:
- S =(cube root of C axis squared) / A axis x B axis
- 4. (15 pts) How representive was your sample?
Reporting
Following the Laboratory Report Format , address the following in +/- 2 pages:
- 5. Using the form measure of your choice (roundness, visual sphericity, or Sneed and Folk sphericity) which alone gives better insight to the differences in the erosion processes between fluvial and glacial settings?
Some background information
25 pts for content
15 pts for presentation
Bonus
(10 pts) Which group one or two is having more fun?
