Instruction Format:

The quarter is divided into 10 modules. For each we will read about a topic, have some background homework, collect some data, and write a short report.

A typical week will look like:
 Monday Class
Lab
 Wednesday Class
 Friday
  • Review work from priot module
  • Introduce new module (assumes you have read background material)
  •  Data Collection
  • Discussion of module
  • Work assigned
  •  Work Due

The first several modules will be tied together with a full day field trip and a more involved project. Linkewise the final modules will be tied together. In other words two longer field trips and projects.

Grading:

-Graduate students will be expected to demonstrate a more complete understanding of the topics via a more rigorous execution and evaluation of assignments.

-Final grade will be the accumulation of points from the following activities:

Points for each activity will be announced when they are assigned. They may vary within or among activities.

Letter grades will be awarded according to the following percentage of the total points.

Projects

In the past projects have often been a three person group efforts and thus the work was divided as follows:

If so then, all members of the group are responsible for the entire effort. So I will assign two grades for each project: 1) a group grade everybody gets and that will be based on the entire project, 2) an individual grade based on the responsibilities outlined above. Specific evaluation criteria will be provided with each project

Most likely however, the projects in 2001 will be individually based.
