Research:
My current research investigates the interactions of climate change and ice sheets. I have attacked the glacial deposits of southern Ohio because they hold abundant organic material that allows for radiocarbon dating and hence critical chronological information. Study of these deposits and their chronology reflect the history of the great Laurentide Ice Sheet. However climate inferences must be drawn by comparing this recordto other paleoclimate records, especially the Southern Hemisphere. Thus I am participating with a team refining the glacial and pollen stratigraphy in the Lake District of Chile and the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
A second thrust of my work centers on processes problems. Detailed geologic mapping in northern and coastal Maine has revealed the history and character of an ice sheet that was incontact with rising marine waters during deglaciation. In contrast genesis studies of tills from the land based glacierthat covered Ohio show a different character. If I can demonstrate that the chronology was similar, it will eliminate variations in ice sheet dynamics but point to climate as theprimary control of glacier fluctuations.
